Code Enforcement

The Code Enforcement Division is responsible for the inspection and enforcement of residential and commercial properties that violate the City of Burnet Code of Ordinances. Code Officers enforce codes/ordinances related to property maintenance, zoning, signs and permits.

The Code Enforcement Division’s goal is to make the City of Burnet  a desirable place to live and work as well as a memorable place for tourists to visit.

Common Code Violations:

  • Litter & Trash Debris

Accumulations of litter, trash and debris on private premises can be more then just unsightly. More importantly, by their presence, vermin-related and public health often coexist. Such accumulations must be removed by the property owner. 

  • Junked Vehicles 

A junked vehicle is a self -propelled vehicle that has an expired motor vehicle certificate and/or is wrecked, dismantled, partially dismantled, or discarded. The vehicle must be restored to operable condition, removed from the property, or be stored in an enclosed structure. 

  • High Weeds and Grass 

High weeds and grass are considered a violation when the growth exceeds 12 inches in height. The owner and tenant are responsible for maintaining the property from any street curbs to the back of the property. 

  • Care of Premises 

When conditions within a property are visible from a public right of way and tend to reduce the visual appeal of the property, a unsightly condition exists. This may be any object or matter such as: appliances, brush, building materials, dead trees, household items, limbs, rubbish, tires and similar items that are openly stored and must be removed. 

  • Dangerous Buildings 

All building or structures must meet the minimum standards. Any building or structure that is abandoned, unsecured, delapidated, has structural damage is a dangerous building and shall be repaired or demolished. 

  • Recreational Vehicles 

Recreational vehicles, boats and major recreational equipment shall only be stored inside an enclosed garage or other accessory building on any lot, on the side or rear yard on a residential lot only when parked on a durably improved surface as described in section 118-20 (m), on a driveway for no more than 72 consecutive hours. No recreational vehicle or major recreational equipment shall be used for living, sleeping, office space, or operation of a business when parked or stored on a lot in a residential district, or in any other location not approved for such use. It shall be unlawful for any recreational vehicle, boat, or major recreational equipment to be parked on a public street longer than 72 consecutive hours.

  • If you see a suspected code violation, contact the Code Enforcement Division.  The Code Officer will investigate the report and will work with the property owner for a resolution.
